Rutland Teachers to Vote Thursday on Next Steps in Contract Dispute

Working 310 days without a contract, Rutland Education Association members will determine path after nearly 18 months of protracted talks
Published: May 7, 2025

RUTLAND, Vt. – In an afternoon meeting tomorrow, members of the Rutland Education Association will vote on an approach to reach a fair contract agreement with the city’s school board. For more than a year, the board has refused to settle with the teachers, who have indicated that they are willing to accept the terms recommended by a neutral factfinder. Unfortunately, the board has chosen to present offers they don’t fully understand and have instead denigrated the neutral factfinder.

WHO: Members of the Rutland Education Association

WHAT: A press conference immediately after members vote on the next steps the union will take to achieve a settlement. The vote itself is closed to press and non-members.

WHEN: 5:30 pm Thursday, May 8

WHERE: Rutland Intermediate School, 65 Library Avenue, Rutland

WHY: After exhausting the negotiating process outlined in Vermont labor law, teachers will weigh their options. As a mandatory 30-day cooling off period has now ended, the school board can impose working conditions for the remainder of the school year. Likewise, the teachers have the option to strike.
