Rutland Teachers to Open Strike Headquarters

While holding out hope board will settle fair contract before Wednesday’s strike deadline, REA members will set up strike offices
Published: May 11, 2025

RUTLAND, Vt. – The union representing the city’s teachers will officially open their strike headquarters Monday, gearing up for a walk-out that is set to begin Wednesday if the board fails to settle a fair contract.

WHO: Members of the Rutland Education Association

WHAT: The official opening of a strike headquarters. Members and supporters will be on hand.

WHEN: 4:30 p.m., Monday, May 12

WHERE: 36 Strongs Ave., Rutland.

WHY: After exhausting the negotiating process outlined in Vermont labor law, teachers overwhelmingly voted last week to strike beginning Wednesday. Even though the school board illegally imposed two years’ worth of working conditions late Friday, the union has invited their board counterparts to the bargaining table on Monday at 4 pm. The strike can be averted if the board keeps negotiating until a deal is struck.
