Amanda Janoo and Molly Gray for a better Vermont

As you know, the Vermont-NEA Board of Directors recently – and unanimously – recommended the election of Amanda Janoo as governor and Molly Gray as lieutenant governor. The current governor has had 10 years to make Vermont a better, more affordable place for working people. If elected, Amanda and Molly won’t just talk about affordability, they will do something about it. 

• Vermonters are tired of how expensive the state has become in the last decade – housing, groceries, healthcare, and energy are all putting a strain on working families. Instead of the rhetoric of the past, Amanda and Gray offer solutions that will benefit ALL Vermonters. 
• Vermonters are not clamoring for tax breaks for the wealthy. Like Amanda and Molly, working Vermonters want fairer taxation, where all – especially the wealthy – pay their fair share for a state that works for all of us. 
• Amanda and Molly support universal primary healthcare, strong, local public schools, and the economic vitality of both urban and rural Vermont. In fact, Molly has noted simply closing small schools won’t do anything to reduce the cost of healthcare. Amanda believes that closing small schools will make it harder for small towns – where most Vermonters live – to survive and thrive. 
• Amanda and Molly – and the other Democrats running statewide – are a bulwark against the expansion of the Trump-MAGA agenda. Together with a Democratic legislature, they can protect Vermont from the dangerous policies emanating out of Washington that threaten our economy, our health, and our democracy. 
• Amanda and Molly don’t just want Vermonters to get by, but to get ahead. Enacting fair tax policies, protecting our small towns, investing in our public schools, shoring up our roads, bridges, broadband, and energy infrastructure, and seeking meaningful healthcare reform are priorities that will make Vermont better for working families and all Vermonters. 
• Economic growth does not happen when state government shrinks from the task. Instead of lamenting the state of affairs and blaming others, Amanda and Molly have a positive agenda to give our communities the resources they need to attract and keep businesses and foster real economic growth. 
• Amanda and Molly know that we need to grow by building more housing that people can afford; provide high-quality childcare and excellent local public schools; create more jobs that pay a living wage; and attract more people to raise families.

I would lean into the role of schools as community hubs and take a whole-child approach by integrating wraparound community services, including free healthcare, social workers, mental health counselors, childcare, food access, and continued adult education, into our schools. This would ensure that our children and our communities have access to the foundational services they need to thrive.

Put simply, now is not the time to double down on reductions in school personnel, facilities, and the services they provide. Rather, now is the time to make strategic investments in Vermont public education. We need to rebuild our schools’ physical infrastructure to be safe, modern, and accessible, in locations that make sense for 2026 Vermont.
