VERMONT-NEA GENERAL COUNSEL POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Vermont-NEA is seeking to fill its General Counsel position. We will accept applications until Monday, December 13, 2021, and conduct interviews in early January.
Duties include: directing the organization’s legal program, including supervising our staff attorney; coordinating the legal assistance and related Vermont-NEA policies as they relate to members and affiliates of Vermont-NEA and the NEA; providing legal guidance and assistance to staff, members, and local affiliates in accordance with the Vermont-NEA Legal Assistance Policy and related policies; and providing legal advice, as requested, to the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, President, Executive Director, and appropriate staff.
The successful candidate will have unusually strong and broad skills, including: unlimited dedication to the interests of both public education and public school educators in Vermont; excellent interpersonal skills; extensive ability to work collaboratively as well as individually; thorough working knowledge of employee rights as well as education and labor laws and processes; excellent oral and written communication skills; understanding of public policy issues and trends affecting labor unions, public education, and educators; and an ability to advocate in public policy settings, including the statehouse and before state agencies.
Applicants for the position of General Counsel must have been engaged in the practice of law for at least 7 years, with extensive experience performing senior-level legal work at a law firm, union, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity. Preference in the selection process will be given to applicants who have litigation experience, expertise in constitutional, labor, or education law, a relationship with organized labor, and strong academic credentials.
